House Schabort
This project, situated on a heritage-rich street in De Waterkant, required a sensitive design approach to reconcile contemporary living with its historic context. Retaining the original Loader Street-facing facade, the design introduces a modern two-bedroom addition set back from the street.
The dwelling has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a double-volume living area, and a rooftop lounge with a pool. Elevated spaces provide spectacular views to the surroundings, including the V&A Waterfront to the north and Table Mountain and Signal Hill to the south.
Key design challenges, such as the narrow, tapered plot and heritage restrictions, necessitated innovative solutions. Natural light was introduced through skylights, vertical glazing, and carefully positioned windows, addressing the plot's limited light access. The staircase, placed along the western wall, was designed to be visually permeable and allow light to filter through, while the ground floor bedroom—located a level below street grade—was illuminated through a cleverly integrated high-level window framing views of Signal Hill.
The material palette of softly textured ochre walls, timber accents, and golden window frames creates a harmonious connection to the surrounding streetscape, underscoring the project’s intent to respect and enhance the architectural character of Loader Street.
