Athlone Wastewater Treatment Works

The design of the new Blower House Complex at Athlone Wastewater Treatment Works outside Cape Town accommodates the upgraded operational functions, clerical amenities and a new electrical building for the plant.

Situated along the N2 highway directly opposite the iconic monolithic red and brown face brick blocks of the old Athlone Power Station and adjacent to existing structures of rough brown face brick and pre-cast concrete window frames, the Blower House aims to fit in among the infrastructure relics while establishing a new standard for material use and detailing that exude the City’s pride in their works without the burden of excessive maintenance.

The building's position determined by the layout of the reactors, fortunately orientated the longer elevation north and empowered optimal design of user space in terms of sunlight and spatial qualities within.

The first-floor linear gallery space visually connects to the blower hall below through continuous glazing while connecting various staff related functions and sun-bathed breakout seating spaces along its axis.
