Cape Town Inner City Housing Proposal

In response to the growing housing crisis and rising property costs in Cape Town, this project addresses the need for affordable accommodation in the rapidly gentrifying area of Woodstock. The development, a collaboration between the public and private sectors, transforms an abandoned site into a dense, mixed-use space with residential and commercial opportunities, all while respecting the surrounding community and enhancing urban design.
The project prioritizes public interaction with its emphasis on streetscape design, pedestrian-friendly intersections, and tree-lined sidewalks. The buildings, primarily four-storey walk-ups, are arranged to follow the site’s natural topography, creating terraced structures and semi-private courtyards. The architecture combines simple massing with detailed facades, using sun-shading, brick accents, and varied window treatments for visual interest and functional shading.
With a mix of new build and adapted historic structures, unit layouts range from compact studio apartments to larger two-bedroom units, ensuring flexibility and diversity within the development.
