Athlone WWTW Admin Building and Archive

This design proposal forms part of the projected upgrade plan for the Athlone Wastewater Treatment Works outside Cape Town, focusing on the adaptive reuse of two historically significant buildings: the Old Inlet Works and the Old Pump House.

Originally marked for demolition, these structures are preserved for their superior craftsmanship, ideal location, and historical significance. Positioned at the most prominent point on the site, their classical layout forms a strong visual axis with the nearby power station towers.

The proposal reimagines the Old Inlet Works Building of the plant as the new Amin Building. Thoughtfully carved-out spaces create functional work areas while introducing lush courtyards for staff, enhancing collaboration and well-being.

The proposal also repurposes the Old Pump House into an archive venue, strategically placing the archives in the old underground sumps for light protection. The main space and ancillary rooms are reimagined as a versatile function venue with breakout rooms, capitalizing on the building's prominent scale and orientation toward the adjacent public plaza.
