SAAO Public Toilet

The brief of transforming a Victorian-era pumphouse into a Visitor's center for the SAAO (South African Astronomical Observatory) in Cape Town presented an opportunity to uncover and showcase the site's layered meanings.
Beyond the building itself a newly introduced laterite pathway guides visitors from the visitor’s center to the rest of the site along which a restored derelict bathroom block celebrates its status as a formed ruin. The bathroom block was renovated by addition of a brick detail and new roof.
