House Basson
This residence, set on a sloping site in a northern Cape Town suburb, embraces both the landscape and the client’s desire for connection. The design takes advantage of the slope, creating a spacious double-volume living area while maintaining a modest street-level presence. A timber-slatted threshold leads to an elevated platform that connects the upper bedroom level with the lower living spaces, where natural light floods in through a diagonally positioned clerestory window.
The L-shaped kitchen, living, and dining areas flow into each other, with the living room opening to outdoor spaces, a pool, and lawns via fully openable stacking doors. A private outdoor area, sheltered from the South-Easter, provides a cozy retreat. Upstairs, the main bedroom faces the mountains, while two smaller rooms overlook established trees that naturally regulate light and temperature. Planters throughout the design integrate greenery into the building's palette, providing natural solar control.
Raw clay brick was chosen for its durability and connection to the garden. The roof’s expansive canopy not only provides shade but also captures rainwater, making the house responsive to Cape Town's climate challenges.
