SALT Architects is a design studio based in Cape Town, pursuing Imagination, Humility and Commitment as core values, toward Innovating Meaningful Possibilities.
Our optimistic team provides innovative solutions while remaining contextually and conceptually relevant. Our office is experienced in all stages of a project’s development from conceptual design to completed construction. We constantly pursue work on a variety of building types and sizes, ensuring an inquisitive approach to allow opportunities to advance traditional patterns.

Gustav Roberts
Director
Gustav is the founder of SALT Architects and has co-led the practice since 2015. With over sixteen years of experience, he provides design leadership grounded in context, identity, and purpose. His approach combines rigorous inquiry with cultural insight and a commitment to meaningful architecture, producing buildings that serve with quiet strength and elevate the enjoyment of everyday life. Projects under his direction have received local and international recognition, including multiple CIFA Awards for Architecture, a SAIA Award for Excellence, a Commonwealth Association of Architects Social Impact Award, and Architizer A+ Awards in both public infrastructure and low- cost educational design. He holds a Master of Architecture (Prof) from the University of the Free State and is registered as a Professional Architect in both SouthAfrica (PrArch 21288) and Namibia (Reg. 496).

Since then, he has been deeply involved in shaping a collaborative practice recognised for its clarity of design thinking, practical execution, and sensitivity to context and place. He holds a Master of Architecture (Professional) from the University of the Free State, as well as a BA in Psychology and Communication from North-West University. Jan-Dirk is registered as a Professional Architect with the South African Council for the Architectural Profession (PrArch 24751018).
