House Lovejoy
Perched on a slope of a hill overlooking Chapman’s Peak and Noordhoek’s pristine beach in the distance, this dwelling in Capri, Cape Town, posed the opportunity to design a building that maximizes outdoor living and expansive views. The brief did not come without challenges, as the prevailing views are oriented between north and west. Having flexible, low-tech sun-controlling devices were of paramount importance. The result is living spaces on ground floor with deep overhangs created by the more private sleeping quarters at the top, thereby passively cooling the house. Two separate and deliberately basic shapes cantilever over the ground floor. This creates a moment of suspense in experiencing the space, as the ground floor holds these boxes that cantilever more than five metres at a point.
